Ngā Tāngata Microfinance offers two types of small, safe, fair loans to qualifying applicants.

Debt Relief  provides relief from high-interest debt (including debt consolidation) and
Asset Building can be used to for family asset building and well being.

There are no interest or fees are charged on the loans. However, successful applicants will need to agree to certain conditions, which are designed to assist them towards financial literacy and understanding when working with a financial mentor.

Ngā Tāngata Microfinance ONLY accepts applications from budgeting services. The loan is part of a plan to increase an applicant’s financial capability.

Asset Building loan

This loan is not emergency money and NTM does NOT lend for vehicles.

What it is, is a loan to help build your family’s assets as well as general well being. This can be a wide variety of items, for example household items such as a fridge, washing machine, TV, bedding, beds, or health items such as spectacles or dental work. School and education related expenses are included in asset building and well being.

All NTM loans are loans of last resort. To be eligible to apply for the Asset Building loan you must:

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Have lived in the same place for two months or more
  • Be on a low income (eg have a Community Services Card)
  • Have enough extra in your budget to comfortably make the repayments within two years
  • Be applying for $2,000 or less
  • Be working with a budget advisor (financial mentor)

Debt Relief loan

The Debt Relief is a loan of last resort and is not emergency funds. They are granted for the purpose of repaying high interest loans. They are only granted once (Debt Relief extension is an exception to this.) You will need to fill in the application form and agree to setting up a redirection from your wages or Work and Income payments. The loan application process requires you to provide copies of bills and statements to demonstrate the budget figures you provide.

Eligibility for Debt Relief no interest loan:

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Have lived in the same place for two months or more
  • Be on a low income
  • Have enough extra in your budget to comfortably make the repayments within two years
  • Be applying for $3,000 or less (the Debt Relief extension is the exception to this)
  • Be working with a budget advisor (FM) for 4 months
